Maybe because I am young and married myself, and know that I no longer act with the same abandon as before. Maybe because I know what it's like to have a baby, and the fact that his wife was giving birth at the time of his arrest is heartbreaking. Maybe it is the fact that his children never got to know their father, the hero. Or maybe it is that his name is rarely mentioned, though he was part of the original trio and that just seems so unjust after everything. You have so much to be proud of with a family legacy like that.
Mindyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17659693348042196844noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3184924268238537722.post-70176136207353208652014-03-21T21:16:47.569-07:002014-03-21T21:16:47.569-07:00Anthony, while I totally respect your right to you...Anthony, while I totally respect your right to your opinion, I challenge you to find anything that Alexander Schmorell himself wrote that would support that opinion. Or even things that contemporaries of his wrote or said about him.

First-hand accounts (his letters, his Gestapo interrogation transcripts, his friends' words) depict a young man whose Russianness was the single most important element of his life. That informed everything else about Alexander Schmorell. It influenced his dress, the literature he read, the people he associated with. He deemed himself Russian Orthodox not because he was particularly religious (he was *not* religious), but because he was Russian.

To claim otherwise is to rewrite history.

And we have that from the most authentic source available: His half-brother, Erich Schmorell.Denise Elaine Heaphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09798324268105614942noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3184924268238537722.post-4386119062440688382014-03-21T18:59:47.464-07:002014-03-21T18:59:47.464-07:00I struggle to understand how anyone can make such ...I struggle to understand how anyone can make such confident judgments about another person's motivations, which are often hidden even from that person. Why separate Alexander Schmorell's faith from his ethical judgments? This sounds suspiciously like what you call others to avoid, namely, imposing one's own view of things onto another person. Americans in particular like to assume that "religion" is easily separable from more public aspects of our lives, such as "ethics." This is a very 18th-century view, and one that is foreign to historic Christianity. Is it really possible for a religious believer to see anything at all apart from their faith? If faith is something extrinsic to one's life, then I suppose the answer is yes. This is how many people today, including those who do not practice a religious faith, see things. But this is to assume a view of Christianity that is actually opposed to that faith; faith is not something added to one's life, but the very means through which we see, interpret, and live our lives. Even a cursory knowledge of the great writers of the Christian tradition would prevent someone from reducing faith to something like "belief," which can be neatly divorced from the rest of one's life and judgment. Then it's possible to take something we may think is more important, such as "ethics," and privilege that. Perhaps the Russian Orthodox Church wasn't as foolish, or devious, as you make it seem. He specifically stated:

"The decision to publish my father’s letters after more than fifty years primarily was based on two reasons: I would like to hand down his message of love to posterity. But I would also like to strip him of a certain hero worship that has become customary in our country from time to time. Human behavior, as he carried it out, has no need of hero worship. Rather, human behavior makes pensive persons more thoughtful and can circumvent new 'unculture' – such as always seems to crop up. Therefore my father’s words will conclude this very personal paper. They are found in the leaflet he drafted, the leaflet for whose message he died..."

At the time, the Scholl faction was trying to have Christoph Probst excluded from White Rose memory, claiming he had never been part of the group (!). That ridiculous assertion has finally been abandoned, but as Micha delivered this memorial speech on the occasion of the dedication of a school named for his father, that was the atmosphere in official White Rose circles.

He was not trying to say his father was more important than Hans or Sophie Scholl. He was simply trying to ensure that his father's legacy was preserved. For what it's worth, after this speech Micha Probst and his brother Vincent (whom Inge Scholl had personally attacked in 1968 for claiming White Rose resistance had been idealistic) completely dropped out of White Rose work. Micha never again spoke publicly on the topic.

This is not a debate over rank of importance, except to state that they were all equals, no one "outranked" anyone else. As noted above, that observation was made by Elisabeth Hartnagel nee Scholl, who (unlike Inge Scholl) actually observed the group in action (February 1943).Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3184924268238537722.post-30178616014216361212013-12-10T01:27:16.390-08:002013-12-10T01:27:16.390-08:00Any argument about rank of importance serves to co...Any argument about rank of importance serves to completely miss the point....and one of Sophie's final comments addressed the unimportance of her own death when stood up against the equally young soldiers dying....any celebrity-making that has put the Scholls at the forefront of the operation belies the spirit of the work and Probst's son takes it further off course
Kschapperthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08491268431506425275noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3184924268238537722.post-22016126438492526782013-07-29T14:04:24.192-07:002013-07-29T14:04:24.192-07:00Rocky, Micha Probst was not being catty. And then set frequency for email notices about new posts. I think daily or weekly would work best.

Then simply join the discussion. I believe CWRS has decided not to charge any sort of fee. The official announcement has not been made yet, but consensus among the board was definitely headed that way.

When I say "join the discussion" - As you read the various dry primary source documents, the sort of comments that will be most helpful are:

1) Your observations about how the events described in that document are connected to events in another document;
2) Additional knowledge you can add - for example, you could research the women's prison where three of the women were held and post that as a comment, or you could do some digging about the prison warden or a judge and tell us what you find; and,
3) Contradictions between two or more documents. For example, if one Gestapo agent stated one thing as "fact" and another Gestapo agent stated something else as "fact", you could point out the discrepancy between their facts.

These are simply examples of ways to contribute to the knowledge base that the wrh3.wordpress.com site is trying to build. I think it will become more fun and more informational once more people are involved! :-)

We are glad you're planning to join the project!Ruth Hanna Sachshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00481493209521686732noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3184924268238537722.post-69341040895848952472012-12-02T11:03:08.794-08:002012-12-02T11:03:08.794-08:00I am so glad you found this. The easiest way to order is on CD-ROM. This e-Book version includes a great deal of primary source material.

http://shop.deheap.com/product.sc?productId=25&categoryId=4

You should be aware that At the Heart of the White Rose came from greatly censored documents. Dr. Inge Jens (editor) told me in person that Inge Scholl had allowed her access only to transcribed (typed) versions of the letters and diary entries, not to the original versions. Additionally, Inge Scholl had redacted them to suit her story line.

Dr. Jens told me, and later told another researcher, that she believed At the Heart of the White Rose represented perhaps 10% of Hans and Sophie Scholl documents, and that when the remainder would be published, it will probably stun the world.

Sadly, those documents probably won't see the light of day for another 25 years. Occasionally the IfZ and Scholl family allow a trickle of new documents. But they certainly have not opened up the entire archive. The listing alone is over 800 pages long.Ruth Hanna Sachshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00481493209521686732noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3184924268238537722.post-33559435934710883132012-04-25T23:37:10.073-07:002012-04-25T23:37:10.073-07:00Audrey, in Fritz Hartnagel's 8/25/1940 letter ...Audrey, in Fritz Hartnagel's 8/25/1940 letter to Sophie Scholl, he writes, “I can well understand that you are tempted every now and again to read a romance novel. I don’t think that is all that bad. Perhaps it is good to read something like that occasionally, so you cherish the other all the more. I hardly believe that you would always succumb to that temptation. You would surely have time to write me every once in a while. (That is how egotistical I am!) But you are now learning for yourself just how much a letter can mean when one has no one dear close by.”

There were other occasions when she alluded to much lighter reading fare, including romance novels. But this comment - as she and Fritz had drifted far, far apart (he had just had an affair with a Yugoslavian woman in Amsterdam) - was terribly ironic for its placement in her timeline.Ruth Hanna Sachshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00481493209521686732noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3184924268238537722.post-15791617382035546012012-04-25T21:20:02.228-07:002012-04-25T21:20:02.228-07:00Where did you get this information from?
